The first portion of the Growing up digital book by Tapscott was really an eye opener. I've made assumptions in my past about our digital generation but never have I actually see noted all these great thoughts about our digital generation. Born in the early 1990's everything I was beginning to do was digital and that's why I can relate so much to this books explanation of what we have become.
Like Tapscott mentioned in his book, "Today's kids are so bathed in bits that they think it's all apart of the natural landscape." People nowadays seriously believe that everything before them was all digital. You speak to them about the days when our parents use to meet people and talk to them without the social networking media like Facebook or MySpace and their facial expressions give us a note of surprise. This new generation has been criticized and congratulated through out many aspects.
Unfortunately, it has been criticized a little more than congratulated due to the fact that we are so different from the prior boom generation. For say some example of their concerns could be that people thing that we are screenagers, Net addicts loosing our social skills and time for healthy physical sports. The reason for this is because of the ways technology have brought change upon our generation. Before if you wanted to know about a certain country or location you would either have to read a book about the location and satisfy yourself with the pictures that were on that book or go explore on your own and see it for yourself. Nowadays if you wanna know how a certain location looks like either like that page on Facebook or view their awesome scenario through YouTube or Google images. Because their is so much to explore throughout the web people from our prior generation have made concerns about our physical and mental health because in their time issues like these were never seen before.
Aside from all the bad attention my generation has received their is still good positive feedback. Like for example Tapscotts explanation saying, "They prize freedom and freedom of choice. They want to customize things, make them their own. They're natural collaborators, who enjoy a conversation, not a lecture." I believe that because of our access to the internet we have been able to create a lot more unique customizations to our lifestyles because we have viewed through the web what others have accomplished. Also because of the web we have been able to collaborate and we enjoy doing that. Things have changed and so we have adapted. It might not be the norm to those that have came before but I believe things are only started to improve as we continue to collaborate on many pressing matters.
