Final Media Presentation Blog

My favorite presentation thus far was Toni's YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIqYf2p3DiU. The reason for my choice among all great presentations was because of the information represented in the video. First of all the representation of the information was great. I finally got to a visual perspective of what we were reading and understanding throughout the semester. Second was the information represented. As I too the technical perspective of the semester crunch he understood the content of the information and its transportation. From the drum beats of the old time villagers to the instant message revolution.  The means to our communication change dramatically. Imagine trying to communicate with villagers across towns with drum sets. How effective do you think those drums were. As everyone has played the phone. Where one person on one side of the tail sparks a conversation. And the idea is to get the exact information across the end to the last person. How many times have we started and finished with the same information? Context is usually left out and nothing secretive could ever pass through them because everyone else will hear. But as Toni explained now we can talk at a more accurate and secretive rate in just seconds through social media like Facebook and Twitter. Aside from information transportation another factor Toni talked about was the copyright issues. When would be able to tell the difference from inspiration and copying? From remixing songs as a DJ to the usage of pictures from social media and the web to alter their websites or blogs. Inspiration can be interpreted very closely to copyright because of its similarities but the issue comes when the original artist doesn't receive the appropriate credit. People sometimes ignore the fact that even though they might not notice that you downloaded their image from the web. That they won't be able to catch you on the act later in the future wen your alterations make a huge inpact in the social web. Someone will notice your image, your face or creative/unique artwork. Thus, then is when you will face reality that not everything you see available on the web is free.

Products have identities?

Bruce Sterling put me in a perspective not yet accustomed to. The reason for that is because I personally have never sat down to think about where exactly has my product been or how it was created. Through busy lives people walk through products as well as purchase them without a hassle or thought oh how it actually got to their table or local store.Sterling just puts the individual through a mental virtual perspective using Spime about these un-thought of factors. The reason of Sterlings big deal on barcoding reflects his statement here, "What we see in this household microcosm is a slow multi-decade, S-curve waves toward increased identity for objects." His main concept is the identity of all the products in his house hold. Everything now days isn't just simply a product. Everything has a name a record and location of birth. This is what Sterlin is making of his point that everything has an identity. As for naming enables measurement. I understood it as the measurement of a certain name or topic through the correspondence of the web and its popularity. You can measure more how many people have used your song name or played it to who is talking about it. Everything is measurable now days. We can even look through this on a business aspect through supply chain management. In my other course we learned about how every small product has an identity, a name, and how its used to order more parts measure the popularity of it so that they make sure it becomes more available to the users that buy them because time is money. This is the business world where if its not traceable through data or measureable then its something that can fluctuate thus not make money on the long run. From barcoding to naming and giving the product an identity its all factor that play a significant role in todays commerce.

Technology/Social Media/Information @ Wazzu

Currently the technological world of Washington State University has advanced tremendously over these last few years. Just for an example, Washington State University opened up its fifth campus on the global web just this last July of 2012. The Global Campus has given Washington State University an upper hand above most campus as it now offers degrees and courses over the world application of the world wide web. This has enable Washington State University to have students globally without ever stepping foot on any of our local campuses.

As for the social media Washington State University has evolved to adapt to the popular trend of this generation. Facebook has had a huge impact in its community and Washington State University had decided to join the social trend on July 6, 2010. Now days, people like myself keep track of every important news update from Washington State University through their Facebook page. Updates from the construction of the new portion of Martin stadium to certain road closure and important weather updates. Thousands of people use Facebook on a daily basis thus the best way to update every student or at least most is through the social web.

For information, Washington State University has work towards a new system to improve both the scheduling aspect and student management. Washington State University decided to implement the new Zzusis program on March 28, 2011. This program which replaced MyWSU serves as the student information systems for the university of today. Even though it has had its improvements as a student and worker at the graduate student admission office, everyone has been on the iffy side of the actual improvements this new system has implemented.

Washington State University overall has definitively improved over these recent years as new technology's have emerged and social media as always have improved. Even though we are up to date we still need to prepare and wait for what is yet to be discovered or improved. Modernization improves every year and to remain on top of the list of our competitors we need to keep improving. Just like Anil Dash explained "This isn't our web today." We have moved from what was important in the past and now we usually just reserve our internet experience to the common trend site.

Economic Ideologies

Soon enough the world won't be ran by physical money. The world will soon be ran by collective data, our personal information. Now day’s companies can put a dollar amount on your personal information, especially your shopping history. From looking on the days where products were the main source of money, companies are now working diligently to sell personal information for customers that need new consumers. Companies are spending millions to track history and store data, nothing is wasted anymore. So how are people reacting to this type of market? Which researcher’s predictions have become more of a reality?

Carl Shapiro alongside Hal R. Varian and co-founder of Electronic Frontier Foundation, John Perry Barlow, have research and documented leading's to possible answers. From both Shapiro and Varian book, The Information Economy, their views towards the information capacity and its use in our market is a little more reasonable/possible than Barlow's work I would say. Shapiro and Varian work explain a perspective that is very accurate, "Information is costly to produce but cheap to reproduce." He explains the matter that physical objects like the book itself isn't the main point about information and its vast impact in the world but rather saying that the information is what’s important, the content. What Barlow explain in his book was that, "In other words, the bottle was protected, not the wine." He explains how the individual didn't get his money through the thought but rather through the object. I personally beg to differ because information is way more valuable in this economy than the physical attribute on you will get that information out.

Anyone can argue and explain how information can be duplicated thus lowering its value but there has been more money making examples of information that has been duplicated than physical products. Companies are selling our personal information like Facebook to companies that are constructing algorithms to target us due to our history of likes and visits. That information can be duplicated but because it holds so much value people are willing to spend vast amount of money to obtain these cases of information.

Comment

You received a very different understanding of the phrase "the medium is the message." I personally understood the medium to be the transportation factor in the message overall. So i completely agree on your understanding that it is a tough phrase to decipher and that everyone can intrepid it very different. I also agree with you on the matter that information is around at any given point. From the clothes we are wearing to the vessels of blood in our body. Everything has valuable information. Relating it to our topic here computers and everything in the digital segment holds important information. Nowadays information is starting to cost money. Everything will soon have a dollar price. Because even your email will be worth a couple dollars.

Galloway

Galloway’s text was very complex. The verses at the beginning of the text were really throwing me off the main subject. As soon as I got the common ground of web protocols the text a lot more understandable. Through this blog I will focus more on the protocol Galloway was talking about. His centralized and decentralized methods of standard protocol on web were way more versatile; even though they all had their disadvantages.  For example, when Galloway explained, “A decentralized architecture is precisely that which makes protocological/imperial control of the network so easy.” The construct of the centralized system also makes it easier to edit or make altercations to it thus, easier to manipulate.

Response to William

Response:

Information Theory

Hey William,

I couldn’t agree anymore on your assumption that those departments all work in conjunction psychology, logic, mathematics and electrical engineering. This is the main reason why a lot of the researchers and developers are working hard to bring those together and get artificial intelligence going. The way I saw the fact that Shannon was trying to involve the quote “the medium is the message” is because of that particular relationship. The medium is the artificial hardware that will bring together the logic and mechanism of the message which is the human mind and reaction. Every day they are working hard to imply these to robotics and as days go by it will soon become a reality. Right now we need to program the computers to do certain functions but soon enough the robots will be taking decisions on their own as researchers find a way to make superficial functioning brains to mimic the way us humans respond to questions and movements.
